 SSF 3044 SOCIOLOGY OF DEVELOPMENT

Greeting, dear readers. Today, i would like to talk about my self reflection of sociology of development course. In my opinion, sociology of development is an interesting subject. I learn a lot of development theories. Throughout the completion of all the assignments that have been given, I really enjoyed the online learning atmosphere.. The assignments given by the lecturers was not really rough, and most of them should be done in group work.. This kind of work makes it easier for students because it may be heavy work, should not be considered heavy because it is not distributed to individual work, and my group members all function in carrying out a given task.

First thing I learned here is soft skill, like editing video, explore on few website or app which can help us to making video assignment. As im learn theories of development, this course assessment also develop my skill in editing and making presentation slide as well. I learn where I can find beautiful template to make slide.  This skill can be used when I am working, can add this skill on my resume. I enjoyed all these assignment. ME, and someone together make our videos assignment, I am pretty sure will miss this moment when we become graduate students. Hope we all will create good career in the future. Ameen.

Next, what I learned throughout the completion of the assigned assignment was that I gained knowledge of past issues. This has further expanded my knowledge of what was happened in my beloved country. These issues can arise from projects that have been created in any particular area. I mean all these issues and projects only involve topics that are our choice in fulfilling the requirements of completing each assignment. For example, in the first video assignment given, our group chose the One Belt, One Road (OBOR) project. The One Belt One Road project is a new thing I know. From here I began to know, that so many things I didnt knew was happen, such as  the issues that occur whether locally, internationally or globally. Besides that I not only learned to know specifically about the details of this project. Like, where it happened, why, how, what happened. In fact I delved further into other knowledge such as the impact of the implementation of this project on the parties involved widely, whether the impact faced had a good effect, or bad, whether it happened over a long period of time, or a short period of time. In this project, I found out, it involves China and Malaysia and other Asian countries, Europe and Africa. So, the One Belt One Road project is a project that connects trade routes in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Based on our study, the One Belt One Road project was not successful. It got cancelled by Malaysia leader, Tun M during that time. What I’m trying to convey here is about my opinion, why it didn’t work out, and despite the success or failure of this project, whether it was justified or not. I feel this project is a form of colonization made by China, so I am relieved that this project cannot be continued. As far as I know, this project only benefits the Chinese government, while Malaysia has to compensate in large amounts every year. Even the Chinese government also monopolizes the profits earned when consumers use the facilities made in the project. East Cost Rail Line (ECRL) is one of the infrastructure projects worth RM55 billion. ECRL is one of the OBOR initiative projects. This project is detrimental to the country. But Dr. Mahathir has negotiated with the Chinese government well. Here, I also learned about the credibility of Tun Dr. Mahathir. He is smart and far-sighted. Then What happened to the Chinese government? Good relations between the two countries were not affected at all. In the meantime, the conclusion from the first Video assignment is that in my view, not all of the projects are beneficial to our country. There are many lessons we can learn here. This includes as leaders, we must be rational like Tun. M. The Malaysian government managed to withdraw from this project is his contribution, otherwise our government will go bankrupt. We say this because we know that Malaysia needs to be committed to resolving the country's debt. Coupled with issues that were hidden when the project was implemented, such as the 1MDB scandal. Malaysia is indeed in big trouble if it does not withdraw from this project.

As far we know, in all the assignments given, all the issues/projects we choose should be related to any of the topics covered in this course. From here I also delved into the theories of development, and may be able to better understand about "what is this specific theory all about". How can this theory be illustrated in a context that is the subject of our group discussion. To make it easier to understand, I would like to relate it to the work of our radio/audio show. The project we chose was the Desaru Pengerang Kota Tinggi Project. Where the Pengerang area located in Johor has been developed as an industrial city area because of its uniqueness, such as the strategic position between Singapore and Indonesia, fertile land and rich in natural resources. Therefore, the Johor government then decided to develop this area by developing several Project Integrated Complex (PIC) projects such as departmental development, housing, infrastructure development such as RAPID, and projects that can improve the living standards of the community there. This also helps the community to get employment opportunities. The projects developed are the uniqueness of the area itself. In the development of this area, we have chosen modernization theory. So here, we better understand in depth about the concept of theoretical modernization theory and at the same time, we also explore the knowledge about the existing development in Pengerang Kota Tinggi Johor. Modernization theory can be described through this state development itself. So I conclude that modernization theory is the progress of a community, rather than carrying out traditional economic activities to modern society. This is said to be so because the Pengerang community used to only carry out economic activities based on agriculture, fisheries and mining. Their lifestyle has changed to a more modern one, they are undergoing a process of development from various perspectives, such as economic and social in particular. They carry out modern activities such as industry, hotel, and more. The Pengerang area has also become a tourist area because it is an area that has been developed and is no longer ancient. Here, the theory of modernization can be used. Community life in this area has changed with the passage of time. Pengerang is a rural area developed and modernized by the Johor government.

Last but not least, I also learned Keynesian approach, where we relate it with some topic that we choose.  In our group discussion, we choose this approach, i thought theory is approach, but its not the same thing. I think approach is more like the way to reach some goal. While theory is more like an explanation of a natural phenomenon that may include rules, hypotheses, and facts.  I'd like to describe what Keynesian economics is and how it works. According to Keynesian approach, the government should raise demand in order to boost growth and create jobs. Consumer demand, according to Keynesians, is an economy's major driving factor. Government intervention might take the form of monetary policies such as interest rate changes or direct government spending to encourage investment. We choose some project, which is Pan Borneo highway and relate it with Keynesian approach. Keynesians, is an economy's major driving factor.
